  • With 2014 coming to a close, we look at possible goals for the year ahead. If you feel your career needs a boost or you have decided to switch careers or have decided you need a change, this post may give you some direction.

    New Year New Role

It is a bit of a myth that people do not land roles over Christmas. Companies need roles fulfilling at times of the year as people leave and go on to pastures new. For many businesses Christmas can be a quiet time of the year, and they use this time to recruit. Other businesses have had an unexpected departure, or have realised they are understaffed. Either way, the Christmas period and just after it is a good a time to land a job as any other.
For an executive position, it takes around six months to land a role. This is providing your CV, LinkedIn profile, and personal branding is on track. It is also giving you the benefit of the doubt that you are devoting the right amount of time to job searching and you are doing this in the right way.
With this in mind it may be in your best interests to start the job search process before Christmas, at the very least sharpening your CV and LinkedIn profile.

    New Year New Industry

You may have decided that the industry you are working in at the moment is misaligned with your natural skills, abilities, and qualifications. Switching industries can often result in a chicken and egg situation. You have the ability to work in the desired industry of your choice but you have no means of proving it. Again your CV, LinkedIn profile, and most importantly your personal brand, will help you find a way into the industry you want to work in.
Finding a new role is not just about fine turning documents however, but rather using them to form part of a career plan. Without a career plan in place, you may lack direction and waste your efforts. It is for this reason that you should use a career consultant. Contact me by clicking here.

    Personal Brand

If you have not already taken steps to develop your personal brand then 2015 should be the year you start. There can be no question the importance of developing your own brand, using a publishing platform to showcase your job knowledge and experience. When your personal brand is on point, opportunities occur as you naturally pick up connections and are in the heads of the important people.
Together with your CV and LinkedIn profile, your personal brand is playing a more important role in discovering opportunities, progressing your career, finding a new job, and switching industries.

    Networking

If you do not have an established network of contacts, now is the time to start. Smart networking will involve a strategic targeting of the right contacts which can make a difference to your career. Although networking may not be something that comes naturally to you, once you get started you'll find it easier than you think.

    Working Overseas

If you have thought about working abroad, 2015 is a particularly good time to make the move. With lucrative opportunities in Asia and the Middle East, not to mention parts of North Africa and South America, the boom years that expats enjoyed in the past is starting to return.
Now is a good time to make the move.
